One of these EPROMs is not like the other 3

I buy EPROMs off eBay for projects and just noticed that all the failing 27C160’s have a different chip arrangement despite identical markings. Unlikely ST would swap out wafer formats in the middle of a production run, but what do I know? Probably I can figure out what the one with 4 blocks is, based on either the datasheet or my other EPROM programmer that reads out the chip ID.

  1. My guess would be an older/ smaller EPROM repackaged as a larger/ newer/ faster part.
Somewhere I used to have an excellent 100+ page guide to identifying counterfeit components and all the shady techniques used to produce them. Unfortunately I’m con my phone atm, and can’t find it easily.

  2. Likely another chip that was remarked to sell on eBay. Happens all the time.

  3. The middle one looks a bit gay.
