  1. Oh!

    I’d always wondered why.

  2. That’s because they are made from a ribbon cable like this:

The coding is there to simplify identification of the individual wires. And as most engineers remember the black-brown-red… scheme, they used the same on the wires too.

  3. They also have the same order as the wavelengths of visible light

  4. You mean this? –> 🌈

  5. They actually have the order of the visible light spectrum…

  6. Rainbows and Resistors, is it just me or is that a cool rock band name?

  7. The legacy pride flag also has the same colours. 🏳️‍🌈

  8. Oh! And how many sleeps before you can use this information?

  9. That’s pretty gay, not gonna lie.

  10. Just wait until OP reads MIL-STD-681. That’s when it gets REALLY fun

    [MIL-STD-681 Color Code Chart](https://cdn.glenair.com/filter/pdf/d/mil-std-681-color-code-chart.pdf)

  11. do you know rainbow colors

  12. Here’s how I was taught to remember by a dirty ol engineer:

Bad boys rape our young girls, but violet gives willingly.

Black, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, gray, white.

It’s just horrible enough to not forget.

  13. What’s even better is that breadboard jumper wires (the ones varying in size with 90 degree bends on each end) used to be color coded to the number of holes it skipped so you knew exactly what size each wire was. If you needed to jump two rows, you’d use a red wire, jump five rows green, etc.

Sadly, I can’t find them in this color scheme anymore, I wish some company would do this again.

  14. you’re gonna flip shit when you see a rainbow

  15. Same as the encoding on the saleae connectors. I still don’t like the black 0 wire, but at least it makes some sense now.

  16. Wait till you hear about a rainbow

  17. I was the same age when I noticed. Thanks!

  18. I wonder what this would look like with various colour blindness… like say red/green colour blindness.

  19. ROYGBIV is going to blow your mind

  20. The rainbow is a very common color arrangement

  21. I keep a set of enamel paint pens in my stuff to color code things like terminal blocks. It’s fun and it’s easy.

  22. Wait until they hear about the rainbow
