  1. This is the PCB for a small 40% keyboard I designed a few months back using one of the KiCAD 5.9999999etc nightlies. Assembled by hand using a solder paste stencil and hot air gun.

Spot the terribly soldered resistor that I’ve only just noticed.

    Edit: more pictures [here](https://github.com/wetherall/ATOLL-1.0)

  2. Those curved traces are lovely! Can’t wait to try them out now that Kicad has updated!

  3. Is it for aesthetic reason you placed the processor in diagonal with rounded traces?

  4. shit like this looks so good and i’m just here using an autorouter because i can’t be bothered to do it myself lol

  5. That’s some PCB-porn right there. Awesome!

  6. Sexy. But you lose points for the screw washers overlapping the traces.

  7. Keyboard guy here. What the heck is this layout?? Why are the top and bottom split? I’m so confused.

  8. That’s the new “Fillet Tracks” function?

  9. Why do you surround the crystal in a ground plane and vias like that?

  10. I have noticed one design flaw on your board.
When joining traces you are using a lot of very sharp acute angles. In PCB design this is considered a bad practice and should be avoided if possible (hence the common use of 45degree and curved routing) because the copper traces have a tendency to crack at those points, either creating paths of high resistance or straight up open circuit!

  11. I’m glad to hear that there are people who enjoy this part of the process.

For me it’s the part that prevents me from having any desire to design my own boards at all.

  12. Why is the crystal surrounded by a ground area? Does it shield EMI or something?

  13. Specially when you place your components right first.

  14. Unrelated but how inconvenient is not having numbers on that 40% board?

  15. Space those parallel traces out to give them some room to breathe. Your signal integrity will thank you

  16. The curly traces look beautiful!

  17. Love those super-thick USB traces. Gotta meet the impedance requirements! 😀

  18. Is there a reason for the curved traces other than aesthetics? Normally they are used only on audio or RF boards.

  19. Nice. Reminds me of routing conduit.

  20. I’ve been trying to design my own for a while. Any chance you could share the schematic? Just trying to figure out the atmel chips with an example!

  21. This is absolutely beautiful, well done. :3

  22. How did you get the curved traces?
