Argh. Reminds me I’m down to my last 3 ATSAMD21G18 QFNs. That was my standard go-to controller for the gadgets I make. Element14 thinks they will have more in stock around March 2023!
Bought a reel of ATTINY412s since those are rare as hens teeth as well. Selling cut lengths of 10 or 25 at cost if anybody needs’em. :-/
When are we going to wake up and stop buying chips manufactured in China,or any electronics at all.At the current rate China will be on track to overpass the US and the west at “EVErYThINg”.Cant we setup emerging countries to start chip and electronics manufacturing….or better yet US.
No way. I’ve done some bodges but I simply don’t have the patience for something like this. My time is worth more than whatever the cost to respin the board is. Or just spin an adapter board.
Until I zoomed it, it looked like the silk screen said Otmel, and I thought things were getting to the point where even obvious knock-offs were prescious.
QFNP anyone?
I always admire this kind of soldering skill. I still screw up thru-hole.
This is deceptively difficult. You have to place a heat sink in between the board pad and the chip pad, or it will be a disaster.
If you lose even one joint, it’s hard as hell to repair.

Inb4 you realize you needed the exposed pad soldered for best performance/correct operation

Depending on how many you have to make, it might be cheaper to make an SMD adapter board that could be soldered directly on those pads.

i just want my pi 4 and a new pc
I wouldn’t have the patience for that. I’d have spun an adapter board for DFN to Castellations. Would let you connect the pad as well.

For REAL, I’m over here like “well the board is only 2 layers but maybe I can make a 4 layer BGA adapter….” Fml

Was building a 3 chip PLL frequency generator. It happens 😛
Was thermal paste used between the IC and the PCB?
