This is a very crude version of a power path controller. Almost all modern phones use these. The fancy ones actually regulate the output voltage to be ~100mv above the battery voltage. This allows regulation of charge current while also regulating the input voltage to the PMIC. The batfet can actually reverse and supply the load in situations where the load draws more power than the input can provide.
