  1. I sometimes search youtube with keywords like “Electronic components collection” etc, many variants but it’s super rare to find anything about it.

Have been doing this for 30+ years now, with the odd clearout (starting from scratch because I had to move or other changes in my life), but it always comes back to me with a vengeance.

Pretty glad I do this, because it’s becoming increasingly hard to come by closeout sales, shut down electronics stores etc, and there’s a LOT of fakes on eBay when it comes down to components (which is still abundant there, albeit the quality very low).

Anyone of you doing this? I mean – I constantly use it to repair my old stuff, when I find interesting computers, cassette decks and just things that needs repairs, I am so happy I have this huge collection of components from 1950 up to today, I basically got everything in mint condition or brand new from that whole era, and sometimes I just mentally feel “at ease” when I sit in that room for hours and just dream of stuff I can build and do.

Sometimes I’ve considered myself a hoarder, and have looked at endless amounts of documentary about the stereotypical hoarder, it seems like the professionals don’t categorize me as that yet (The professional difference between a Hoarder and a Collector is essentially that the hoarder hoards everything, while the collector is collecting a specific item or category which they meticulously sort, keep a track of and keep orderly).

I would love to hear if there are more of my kind in here.

  2. An most of the time an involuntary hobby as well…. Serious question: What do you do with the components? Most passive components can be hard to properly identify besides their obvious markings.

  3. The first rule of mass electronics collecting is to not talk about electronics collecting…

  4. Oh my god! Is that a Uni-t Bench DMM?

EDIT: The OMG was for how impressive this collection is if the bins are all filled.

  5. The acquiring is easy. It’s the sorting, labeling, and organizing, that I struggle with.

  6. Brother I know it all to well. This hobby is one hellofa drug.

That excitement when you find a microwave on the side of the road while driving. “HOLY SH.*” MOT MOT MOT MOT.

Honestly my wife thinks I’m insane but I Find so much joy in it. Those Acro mills storage systems add up.

Nice to see another madman like me out there👊🏻

  7. I know that feeling – although my collection is nowhere near as impressive as yours, neither in terms of sheer volume nor in terms of organization.

But yeah, I often find myself wanting to build something and I know I have all the components I need. Sometimes, however, it does happen that I can’t find them anymore and so I end up ordering new stuff anyway… XD

  8. How many are for assorted lengths of wire?
